Implementation of the Electoral Awareness Forum for Religious Leaders in Sulaymaniyah within the Framework of the "Democracy and Transparency" Project

Sulaymaniyah | 12 June 2025

EIN Network for Election Monitoring and Democracy implemented a dedicated electoral awareness forum for religious leaders as part of the “Democracy and Transparency: Empowering Civic Engagement and Media Freedom” project, funded by the European Union and held in partnership with Shams Network and Tammuz Organization.

The forum was held at Titanic Hotel, bringing together 74 participants, including religious leaders, representatives of civil society organizations, and media professionals. It was attended by Mr. Amanj, Director of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) office in Sulaymaniyah, along with representatives from the partner networks.

The forum emphasized the important role of religious leaders in encouraging citizens to participate in the elections as both a religious and national duty. It also highlighted key aspects of the electoral process, the biometric registration system, and the modern technologies used in voting.

The event featured rich discussions, including a notable question raised by a religious leader regarding difficulties in reading some voters’ fingerprints. In response, the Commission confirmed that a dual mechanism has been activated, including both thumbprint and facial recognition, to ensure inclusive participation.

At the conclusion of the forum, participants agreed to continue awareness efforts through religious sermons, with a focus on encouraging voters to choose competent candidates who are committed to serving both the nation and its citizens.
